Meet the Crowd: BookExpo America, 2018 — Day Two
/By Natalie Bozimowski
BookExpo America is the largest annual book trade fair in the country – a place for literature lovers in their thousands to gather in celebration of books and those who publish and sell them.
At the same time as the event features an extraordinary array of writers and influential keynote speakers from the literature universe and beyond, it also promotes and gives a platform to up-and-coming literary voices, and others involved in the publishing and book industries, such as librarians and booksellers.
In this series, we meet the people who make up BookExpo 2018.
Name: Holly West
Bio: Holly is an editor for Swoon Reads — Macmillan's Young Adult imprint, where writers can upload their manuscripts for anyone to read, helping to determine which manuscripts should be published. Her joy and excitement was contagious.
Must-Read Authors: Terry Pratchett is a personal favorite for his humor and "hard truths", while she finds Tamora Pierce's heroines irresistible.
Name: John Green
Bio: Looking out at the crowd with curiosity, we spotted John waiting in one of many lines among the exhibitor booths. He spends his time blogging and reviewing books on his site Like It Is, after starting out as a reviewer on Amazon. His first BookExpo was back in 2010 and he has been hooked ever since — connecting with people is what keeps him coming back.
Literary Hero: John is in the midst of creating one of his own in a series he's writing.
Name: Laura Mauro
Bio: A soon-to-be theatre teacher, book blogger, "bookstagram-er," and YouTuber, Laura immerses herself in all-things literature. She's hit up not only BookCon but ComicCon to meet her favorite authors, but after exploring BookExpo for the first time, she's found a new happy place. She came prepared too: armed with a schedule of galley drops, she walked away with three bags of new reads.
Must-Read Book: The Illuminae Files by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, but her heart belongs to Ron Weasley from Harry Potter.
